Music has always had a way of reaching me before words do.

The sound squeezed from a bell, the rhythm of a song, a change in tempo or mood—music helps me arrange my thoughts. Sometimes I hear conversations inside lyrics. Sometimes a melody gives shape to a story or message that has been sitting on a shelf in my mind, waiting for its time.

There are many stories on those shelves.

At this point in my life, they are very much alive—and they are ready to come down.

My writing grows from lived experience, memory, observation, imagination, family, humor, loss, love, and all the peculiar things human beings do along the way. I may write in a sudden burst or talk through an idea for weeks before a sentence ever reaches the page. I don't force that process. I let the story tell me when it is ready.

I write best when I have lived something.

That doesn't mean every story is autobiography. It means I want something truthful underneath it. A feeling, a conversation, a question,  a ridiculous moment; something recognizable enough that another person can read it and think, I know that feeling.

There is no need for exaggeration. There is, however, the writer's prerogative—if I may.

And I most certainly may.

I believe in the magic of a blank page, a steady pen, and a loud imagination.

I wander through memory and possibility and bring back the stories that refuse to leave me alone. I encourage other people to write theirs, too. Put the thought on paper. Give it somewhere to live. You may be surprised by what it becomes.

I am a mother of four, a grandmother of four, an author, a storyteller, and a lifelong lover of music. Family alone has supplied enough material to keep my pen employed for quite some time.

My books don't sit neatly inside one genre because neither has my life. I write about family, animals, becoming, relationships, memory, humor, loss, imagination, and the truths we sometimes discover when we weren't looking for them.
